Abstract
    In the present study, a detailed TELEMAC2D hydrodynamic model is developed for the modelling of three scenarios of interventions at the area of the INEOS facilities, i.e. the deepening of the existing jetty and a new quay wall construction (two variations). The main objective is to provide insight into the future maintenance requirements by making use of the numerical modelling results. Apart from this, the present study focus on how selected numerical and physical parameters (grid formation, bed roughness, turbulence) can affect the performance of the numerical model when simulating the hydrodynamics of tidal estuaries, through a series of sensitivity tests. The effect of local grid adaptation on the numerical diffusion and consequently on the results is further discussed. For the model’s calibration and validation, ADCP transect measurements, single-point velocity measurements and water level measurements at different stations in the Lower Sea Scheldt are utilized. Numerical results on the effect of the investigated interventions on the flood and ebb currents, and on the sediment transport at the area of interest, are presented.
