Fisheries management has failed to deliver on its social, economic and environmental goals under the current European Fisheries Policy. Balti c Sea fi sheries are a clear example, providing overwhelming evidence.
How can sustainability in European fi sheries be achieved? What should sustainable fi sheries look like? How could they be governed?
What are long term incenti ves for various stakeholders? What is the role of science? How are environmental considerati ons included?
Initi ati ves on a nati onal or regional level do not have the mandate to address these issues. The revision of the Common Fisheries Policy (CFP), initi ated in the spring 2009, presents an opportunity to change the situati on for the bett er. By analysing fi sheries management practi ces in Norway, USA and Canada, recommendati ons have been elaborated to provide broad conclusions about best practi ces.
These are applied to the Balti c Sea in order to develop a concrete scenario, exemplifying best practi ces which can be achieved through the reform of the CFP.
Balti c Sea 2020, Balti c Nest Insti tute and the Stockholm Resilience Centre would like to invite you to a conference where applying best practi ces in the Balti c Sea illuminate the pan European challanges that need to be adressed:

    • Governance of the CFP
    • Economic and social incenti ves
    • Science and fi sheries management
    • Integrati on of environmental considerati ons.
