| Abstract |
| The research project was launched in 2000. It aimed at exploring possible contributions of an integrated approach (Integrated Coastal Zone Management, ICZM) to the management of interventions in the area of the Venetian Lagoon. The approach was tested on a pilot area, the island of Sant'Erasmo, which had been involved in intensive public works for its physical preservation. The public interventions were supposed to produce important socio-economic effects and determine the perspectives of future development for the island and the local community, offering new perspectives for traditional activities (agriculture) and new opportunities (tourism, recreational activities). The research concentrated on two aspects of the management of interventions: co-ordination among actors and between public actors and stakeholders on the one hand, and the perception of interventions and development perspectives created by the project on the other. Two questionnaire surveys were carried out for both aspects among local stakeholders (at the beginning and during the final phase of the public works). The results were used to investigate their perceptions about the current situation and their views about possible future scenarios. A new research programme was launched in late 2002 to investigate the feasibility of extending economic valuations outside the well known context of the Sant'Erasmo island, and including a specific research line aimed at exploring the potentials of Geographical Information Systems for such purpose. A second phase of investigation was started among stakeholders, especially residents of the island in January 2004, to reveal their perception of and participation in the ongoing transformation process and to discuss scenarios of future development in a moment when the first part of the interventions for rehabilitation of the island had been terminated. The project was concluded at the end of March 2004, results have be presented at the beginning of November 2004. |
