Abstract
    The new species, Belemnospongia parmula, occurs with the new sponge Pileospongia lopados, of the new family Pileospongiidae, in the St. Genevieve Limestone and equivalent beds in the Huntsville, Alabama area. B. parmula is a low conical sponge composed of unbundled to weakly bundled, thatched, radiating diactines and is tentatively placed in the Choiidae among the Demospongea. P. lopados is a broad, flat, saucer-shaped sponge composed principally of smooth diactines but with scattered hexactines in the thick sponge wall. Canals which rise normal to the upper surface empty on the crests of small mounds. The Pileospongiidae are thick-walled sponges built of roughly parallel layers of diactines and scattered hexactines, but with a skeletal net lacking synapticulae. The Pileospongiidae are placed in the Lyssakida among the Hexactinellida. B. parmula also occurs in roughly equivalent beds in the Mississippian of Tennessee and Kentucky, and in Pennsylvanian beds in Illinois.
