Abstract
    During the last few decades many offshore artificial islands have been developed for various uses. Some have been built, many others not. Based on long-term experience with man-made islands an analysis of the underlying reasons is presented. For the storage and treatment of industrial residual materials and slightly contaminated dredged material from maintenance dredging in harbour basins and waterways, it is still difficult to find proper disposal sites on the mainland, in particular in the south-west of the Netherlands and Belgium. As viable alternatives, two island-based offhore storage basins of approximately 200 mln m3 have recently been presented. One is projected on the Belgian part of the continental shelf and the other in the outer Western Scheldt estuary. To improve their economic feasibility, additional uses have been introduced. The relation between the dimensions of the islands (size and water-dept) and the construction costs is further analysed.
