Abstract
Size and velocity of inland vessels are growing rapidly. This tendency affects the development and the maintenance of the inland waterways which are partly characterised by a winding course of river, extremely shallow water depth and restricted breadth. Numerical simulations seem to be suited to analyse numerous case studies of ship's motions under different random conditions in advance which should lead to improve the necessary expertise to minimize the risk for the vessels as well as for the environment. This paper presents results of numerical and experimental analyses of ship motions with consideration of river current and water depth. Mathematical models for the determination of the influence of variable current environments on the manoeuvring behaviour are presented and validated by model tests. Some implementations of the mathematical model are presented, too.
