Abstract
Marshlands bordering water courses serve a variety of purposes useful for maintaining general environmental quality. These include removal of detritus from the waster mass and its breakdown, the absorption of inorganic plant nutrients, the dampening of surges in water level, conservation of attractive and economically important species, and the function of a sink for toxic substances. There is a great need to conserve the habitats of this kind that still remain intact.
