Abstract

Five visual fish censuses were conducted in coastal waters of the Gulf of Aqaba, Red Sea, from July 1977 to November 1981. In total 73 species were counted in three habitats of the investigated site of an area of 74 m2. The highest species diversity, species richness, and standing crop were found on the forereef, less on the knoll and on the seagrass-sand bed. The average standing crop amounted to 962 kg h-1. For further analysis of variations in species composition and number of individuals with time and habitat, indexes of coefficient of community, species diversity, and equitability were calculated. Some observations on the seasonal occurrence of the common fish in the study site are given.
