Abstract
Flow requirements of the spat of O. edulis and C. gigas were assessed by measuring clearance rate of algal suspensions. Clearance rate increases with flow rate up to some threshold. Food concentration in the range 40-1185 µg/Cl and relative column dimensions have no effect on clearance rate measured at a suitable flow rate. Following transfer of each species from ambient temperature (15 °C) to 10 °C and 20 °C clearance rate was found to be temperature dependent after an initial period of 3 days. After this initial period Q10 values over 20 days were 1.5+/-0.2 for O. edulis and 3.3+/- 0.6 for C. gigas . Weight exponents were 0.74 for O. edulis and 0.68 for C. gigas . Models which predict flow requirement between 10 °C and 20 °C to give 90% clearance by each species were derived by integrating the data relating clearance rate to temperature and body size. For O. edulis FR = (0.47 + 0.04T) LW-0.26 and for C. gigas FR = (-0.92 + 0.17T) LW-0.32 , where FR is flow requirement (ml/min/g), LW is live weight (g) and T is temperature (C). The models probably lose their predictive value once oysters start to mature.
