Abstract
Pacific herring (Clupea harengus) were observed spawning in small circular holding tanks and a large rectangular tank. Each act of egg depodition by the female involved a standard sequence of actions and resulted in an average deposition of <50 eggs. The spawning act was then continued with another egg deposition or the fish returned to the school before initiating another spawning act. The addition of a small amount of sperm initiated spawning by both sexes whereas the presence of eggs did not. The initial release of sperm could be induced by a variety of different types of shock such as handling, abrupt salinity change and chemical pollution, all of which have their counterparts under natural conditions.
