Abstract
    The variability of selected aspects of the planktonic and fisheries sub-systems, including fluctuations in the abundance of organisms and changes in their geographical distribution, are illustrated by examples demonstrating the existence of common elements in different parts of the North Atlantic Ocean and at different levels of the ecosystem. Circumstantial links between a number of biological events and climatic and oceanographic changes have been established, relating to time scales of a few years to several decades and from strictly regional effects to those embracing the whole of the northern N. Atlantic. However, management decisions concerning the environment and the resources it supports may be more closely influenced by recent and prospective fluctuations at the interannual level and this paper concentrates on this particular point. Evidence available so far suggests that variations in the strength and direction of the N. Atlantic Drift together with regional wind-induced advection play a significant role in determining biological changes.
