| Abstract |
A survey is given of the distribution pattern of Oribatida (Acari) in salt-marshes and inland saline areas of the western Wadden Sea area. Five species have been found which are bound to the saline environment: Ameronothrus nigrofemoratus, Ameronothrus schneideri, Hermannia subglabra, Oribatella arctica litoralis and Punctoribates quadrivertex. They are characterized as halophilous. The distribution pattern of the oribatids was studied in relation to the communities of higher plants. In saltmarshes Ameronothrus nigrofemoratus, A. schneideri and Punctoribates quadri- vertex are characteristic of Puccinellion maritimae vegetations, Hermannia subglabra of Armerion maritimae vegetations and Oribatella arctica litoralis of Puccinellio-Spergularion and some Armerion vegetations. The lack of Ameronothrus species is the only considerable difference between the oribatid faunas of salt-marshes and saline areas on the landward side of dikes. The extent to which non-halophilous species invade saline areas differs. Oribatid faunas give valuable indications concerning differences in environment. |
