| Abstract |
The disease dealt with are almost exclusively known or thought to be infectious and the most important factors in mortality and developments in the last decade in the study of oyster disease are considered. Among the diseases discussed in relation to epidemiology and etiology are shen disease, caused by the fungus Ostracoblabe implexa, amoeba-caused diseases, implicated organisms being Flabellula calkinsi, Vahlkamfia calkensi and V. patuxent, Haritimannella tahitiensis, Dermocystidium marinum, Labyrinthomyxa marnia, gill diseases caused by Trichodina Dermocystidium marinum, Schizochytrium, Thaustochytrium. A review of gill diseases reveals no clear picture of a specific disease attributable to an identified etiological agent. Other diseases are also reviewed but causative organisms have not been identified. Oyster diseases must be conceived broadly to include not only infections diseases but all the interacting factors affecting oyster populations adversely. Oyster diseases contribute one inseparable facet of great problem arising from varied human activities which have drastically affected the environment. |
