Abstract

A volcanic eruption took place in the autumn 1970 on the 3602 arctic island of Jan Mayen. About 4 km of new coastline was created. The benthic marine fauna and flora on "new" and "old" grounds were investigated during an expedition in Aug 1972. Generally, the fauna at Jan Mayen has typically arctic features. No typical animal communities on level bottom were recorded. The dominant sessile fauna at the "new" grounds were hydrozonas and bryozoans, at the "old" grounds sponges, sea anemones, bivalves and colonial ascidians. Most of the motile spp on the "new" grounds were also found at the "old" grounds, but they were much more sparsely distributed. 5 algal spp were found on the "new" grounds, and only 2 of these were also found on the "old" grounds. It will probably take many years before the fauna and flora at the "new" grounds is nearly the same as the fauna and flora at the "old" grounds.
