Abstract
Petroleum derived material, nutrients, phytoplankton, bacteria and ciliates were studied in two enclosed 10 m³ water columns; one control bag (CB) and one bag (OB) with addition of 0,5l unweathered crude Efofisk oil to the surface just prior to the onset of the spring bloom. Polar photooxidation products of the oil accumulated in the water column to concentrations as high as 5 mg.l-1 and led to a more slowly developing phytoplankton bloom in the OB than in the CB. The addition of oil stimulated the bacterial population in the OB, resulting in increased bacterial numbers, high mineralization potentials for hydrocarbons (naphthalene and hexadecane), and increased consumption of inorganic nutrients. The stimulation of the heterotrophic activity was relatively minor, however, and the OB remained autotrophically dominated during the 8 weeks of the experiment, despite the introduction of large amounts of petroleum derived material.
