Abstract
    Primary production was determined at Lake Belau (North Germany) during an annual cycle by both the filtration and the acidification and bubbling method, simultaneously. In addition, laboratory experiments were conducted to check the results obtained from the in situ measurements. Due to calcite precipitation, the filtration method resulted in a considerable overestimation of primary production. Radioactive calcite crystals remain on the filter, increasing the count rate. Different methods of decontamination did not reduce the error by an acceptable amount. It was shown that only the acidification and bubbling method is satisfactory for determining the real primary production in Lake Belau.
