Abstract
    Turbot and Dover sole fed dry pellets for 22 respectively 17 month periods have both shown high growth rates. Each aquarium used had a surface area of 2.1 m², and a depth of only 0.3m. The water temperature was about 15°C and the salinity 34.5°/oo during the experimental period. Each diet was fed to about 100 fish. The dry-feed composition for turbot was based on selected qualities of fish meal, capelin oil, dextrinized starch together with vitamins, minerals, and binder. Two similar diets were tested using either lobster extract or betaine as feed stimulants in the turbot experiment. The same main feed ingredients were also used in diets offered to sole, supplied with either squid meal or cooked blue mussels. Every month from about day 150 and up to 665 days of age all fish were measured and weighed alive. The growth rate of turbot was not different in the various feeding groups. Sole offered dry feed including squid meal had a mean body weight of 169g compared to a mean weight of 141g at the same age for fish fed dry pellets supplemented by blue mussels. In the turbot experiments the mortality was insignificant (0-2%), and for sole it was 7-13% within 665 days. The experiments are being continued and so far the results indicate good growth rates on dry pellets both for turbot and sole. Obtaining marketable size of 2kg for turbot after a 2- years feeding period and a marketable size of about 300g for Dover sole after a 2.5-years feeding period seems to be possible.
