| Abstract |
In Spain there are different strains of Artemia diploid bisexual Artemia (Artemia runisiana), diploid bisexual Artemia (Artemia franciscana ), di/triploid parthenogenetic Artemia (A. parthenogenetica), tetraploid parthenogenetic Artemia (A. parthenogenerica). The ecology of these Spanish strains is poorly known at this time. This work is the first step of a more ambitious project that aims at studying the ecology of Artemia in the central part of Spain. In this zone of Spain the presence of Artemia in solar saltworks and salt lagoons is known, but ecological data are lacking. In this paper we surveyed these regions and tried to determine the cartography and characteristics of Artemia . The first area surveyed was in Guadalajara and Soria, near Madrid. Samples were taken in ten solar saltworks. The presence of a tetraploid parthenogenetic Artemia was confirmed in the saltworks where it was previously mentioned to occur. Even in the saltworks where Artemia had not been mentioned, it was found and characterized as a tetraploid parthenogenetic Artemia . The second area surveyed was Ciudad Real where Artemia was mentioned (triploid parthenogenetic strain), but presently it does not occur in this zone because of the destructions of the lagoons. The distribution of tetraploid parthenogenetic Artemia in Spain is limited to continental areas in the central region of the country, and in two zones of the Mediterranean coast (Tarragona and Cadiz). The biogeography of this tetraploid strain is not clear at this time and it is necessary to study its ecology prior to analyse its distribution. The morphology of Artemia occurring in all the saltworks was studied and its biological parameters determined by laboratory growth-experiments. |
