| Abstract |
The design of Aquafish SORT® recirculation systems is based on research carried out at the Departments of Aquaengineering, water purification and Fish culture at the Agricultural University of Wageningen, The Netherlands. The systems are adapted to practical circumstances and have been used by Aquafish for several years. Every Aquafish SORT® recirculation system is a modular system consisting of plate separators (solids removal by sedimentation e.g. faeces, denitrification, and pH-maintenance), trickling filters (biological processes, e.g. nitrification and carbonaceous oxidation, aeration, and degassing, e.g. carbondioxide and nitrogen) and protein-scimmers (removal of fine suspended solids together with scum, and ventilation via a blower). If necessary for the metabolism of the fish, pure oxygen is added into the water. An Aquafish SORT® fish farm consists of a few modular recirculation units, the dimension of each part depending of the fish species. The fish are automatically led by a computerized system (less disturbances) and the culture water is continuously recycled by pumps and purified in the Aquafish recirculation system. The system is completely controlled (power supply, water quality, temperature, water flow, feeding, stock density, etc.) and equipped with an alarm system. Under these optimal conditions, the fish grow fast, the good water quality puts less stress on the fish and reduces the occurrence of diseases, and makes fish farming a rewarding operation. |
