Abstract
The number and volume of chemical products transported by sea has been constantly rising since the end of the Second World War. The trend for the next few decades remains upwards, with even larger ships although not necessarily in greater numbers. Over the years, the issue of the risks related to this transport has become more acute for obvious reasons, and the latest International Maritime Organisation research and development forum quite naturally focussed on the question of whether a chemical accident has become more likely and potentially more serious than a major crude oil spill. This book sets out the situation as it is today, based on the analysis of existing knowledge, the regulations currently in force and the feed-back from fifty-five accidents which have occurred world-wide over the last thirty years.
