| Abstract |
This paper presents a systematic revision of the Bivalvia and Gastropoda from the Aalter Sands (at Aalter, province of Oost-Vlaanderen) and the first description of those from the Oedelem Sands (at Oedelem, province of West-Vlaanderen). Both horizons are of Middle Eocene age. Together they form the lower part of the Bruxellian (Bl or Formation of den Hoorn). The Oedelem Sands with Venericardia carinata are the older part of this formation, whereas the Aalter Sands with Megacardita planicosta lerichei are its upper (and younger) part. 68 bivalve species have been identified from the B1 beds, more of half occurring in both horizons, but not in the same frequency. 10 bivalve taxa new to science have been described: Nucula fragilis convexior, Nuculana nolfi, Nuculana striata halestrensis, Divalinga chavani, Bathytormus jeffreysi, Tellina flandrica, Tellina strougoi, Tellina goodei, Corbula flandrica, Caestocorbula gandavensis. 45 gastropod species have been identified from the Aalter Sands, of which two are new to science (Omalaxias brusseliensis and Mnestia flandrica). The bivalves from the Oedelem Sands are similar to those found in the Ypresian strata, but those from the Aalter Sands (at Aalter and Gent) show more affinities with those of the Upper Bruxellian (B2 or Formation of Brussels), and with those from the overlying strata. For the gastropod taxa from the Aalter Sands similar results have been found. |
