Abstract
Analysis of transported assemblages of Mactra corallina from Aberdeen beach shows that the samples consist of two components, freshly-killed shells and exhumed dead shells. The influences of current and wave sorting, selective breakage, and the action of predators and scavengers are considered with respect to the population components. Shell fragment analysis is used to demonstrate sorting of the assemblages, and reservations are expressed on the quality of palaeoecological conclusions which can be drawn from fossil-transported assemblages.
