| Abstract |
Dredging International has invested heavily in new technologies for high specification environmental and remedial dredging operations. These technologies, described here, include mechanic solutions such as the Ecodrag and Ecograb dredging systems and hydraulic systems such as the Scoop and Seep dredges. Capabilities, operation and performance on major projects are reviewed. Also described are the aims and results of the ECEPA-LIFE project which involved 9 European port authorities in studies and pilot projects to develop a common clean-up methodology. Soil remediation specialist Soils NV has carried out pilot projects in Antwerp's Petroleum Harbor South to clean up hydrocarbon contaminated sediments. These studies proved the feasibility of directional drilling of horizontal drains to depths of 20m and distances of hundreds of metres. Extrapolation of the technique to full scale clean-up of the harbour is detailed. Dredging International has also been involved in removing contaminated wastes and soils from redundant coal mines. |
