| Abstract |
WOCE is a large and complex programme with many different data types being collected by many different individuals, institutes and countries. Data management is an end-to-end process in WOCE, with details of the approach taken outlined at the implementation stage of the programme. The data system is a distributed one, but one that presents the user with easy data and information access by coordination and consistency between data centres. Much of the coordination is carried out by the Data Information Unit which performs the essential task of tracking of the field programme and the data sets. The success of the data and information system is built on developing a good relationship between the scientists and the data centres. This has been achieved by recognising the needs of the scientists and defining a data sharing policy that strikes a balance between their needs and the requirements of the programme. A key element of the WOCE data system is that it utilises a combination of scientific and technical expertise. The timely provision of data sets, products and therefore value for money to the community is achieved by the WOCE data system. It is a developing system that adjusts to changing needs of the user community through adaptation to new data types and by developing new products. |
