Abstract

This paper presents the results from examination and determination of tropical species of Buccinidae from deep water, collected by several expeditions, mainly in the Indo-Pacific area. The material comprises 14 genera and the following new taxa are described : Calliloconcha knudseni (Kermadec Trench, 5480 m), Costaha crosnieri (SW Indian Ocean, 1740-3760 m), Eosipho coriolis (Philippines, 880 m), Eosipho engonia (SW Indian Ocean, 600-1125 m), Eosipho thorybopus (Mozambique Channel, 400-500 m), Kapala bathybius (SE Atlantic, 3550 m), Manaria clandestina (SE Asia, 440-1490 m), Manaria makassarensis (SE Asia, 490-875 m), Manaria formosa (Mozambique Channel, 400-500 m). For the preparation of this paper we have examined material and/or types of almost all previously described deep sea species of tropical buccinids and these are figured and commented on. An appendix lists all Neogene and Recent supraspecific names of Buccinidae proposed after the publication of Wenz' "Handbuch der Palaozoologie " (1941-43).
