| Abstract |
The multiplication of sea bed prospecting in the French West Indies from the infra-littoral area to the depths of the upper or middle bathyal zones (to 900 meters) has considerably increased understanding of mollusks in general and of the Olivellidae of this region in particular. Several species of the Olivellidae family belonging to the genera Olivella and Jaspidella, are known in the West lndies and are regularly cited in older works. More recently, other mentioned species for the Caribbean as well as newly described specieshave been added to the malacological inventory of the West Indies, where at least 25 Olivella and 2 Jaspidella are presentin these waters. In addition to the most prominent morphological and chromatic characteristics, biometrical elements have been used to facilitate the identification of the different taxa encountered and tofurther detail the description. On this basis, four new species are described, 3 of them: Olivella decorata, O. intermedia and O. albina, originate from the insular shelf of Martinique and are integrated into the subgenus Macgintiella because their general characteristics conform to those of known species already belonging to the subgenus. The fourth species, Olivella minuscula, comes from the infra-coastal zone of Guadeloupe, and is included in the subgenus Olivina for similar reasons, notably the structure of the columellar system. Most of the shells being empty when collected, their status as new species cannot be substantiated by their internal anatomy. Furthermore, indications are brought concerning the bathymetricdistribution of Olivella seen and collected over the whole of the French West lndies. |
