Abstract
This study presents the first phylogenetic hypothesis of unicornfishes relationships (Naso, Acanthuridae). Phylogenetic analysis of 13 characters and 15 ingroup taxa, yielded 14 trees of 26 steps and a consistency index (CI) of 0.846. However, the preferred tree is derived from exclusion of one character and results in one tree of 21 steps and a CI of 0.905. These results suggest that one-plated unicornfishes and zooplanktivorous unicornfishes form monophyletic groups, but horned uni- cornfishes do not. The four herbivorous unicornfishes are basally located, suggest- ing zooplanktivory arose once in Naso and is a derived, diet condition. Although myology at the species level is highly conservative and resulted in few phylogenetically informative characters, these characters are highly corroborative.
