Abstract
Loessic sequences of Villers-Adam have provided malacological assemblages from Late Saalian and Weichselian deposits as well as pollen contents from Weichselian Middle Pleniglacial levels. Palaeoenvironmental and climatic interpretations inferred from biocenoses reinforce those deduced after pedo-stratigraphic data. Fast sedimentation phases with calcareous loess imply very cold conditions as registered by impoverished malacological assemblages. Within these «Pupilla faunas», distribution of hygrophilous taxa such as Succinea oblonga indicate variations of humidity (Late Saalian drier than Weichselian Late Pleniglacial). By contrast the Weichselian Early Glacial and Middle Pleniglacial are characterised by slower sedimentation with development of soils sequences implying improvement of climatic conditions. This interpretation is strenghtened by occurrence of richer molluscan faunas and furthermore by preservation of pollen indicative of tundra landscape during the Weichselian Middle Pleniglacial.
