| Abstract |
The FUNAMOX research expedition is an initiative of Zeynep Erdem, Darci Rush and Peter Kraal, after an internal call in early 2018 for proposals at the Royal Netherlands Institute for Sea Research (NIOZ). The expedition features NIOZ researchers from the departments of Marine Microbiology and Biochemistry (MMB) and Ocean Systems (OCS), complemented with colleagues from ETH Zürich, Utrecht University and the University of Namibia. The expedition contributes to several large research projects: ERC DIOLS granted to Stefan Schouten, NESSC and SIAM NWO gravitation grants to Jaap Sinninghe Damsté. Ship time and access to sampling equipment was granted by National Marine Facilities, and further financial support was successfully applied for from Royal NIOZ (funding for research opportunities).The overall aim of the cruise was to gain insight into the biogeochemical cycling of the nutrients carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus and essential trace metals in the Benguela Upwelling System (BUS) off the coast of Namibia, with special emphasis on the impact of (seasonal) oxygen depletion on the Namibian shelf and slope. |
