| Abstract |
A group of affine forms Marginella anna Jousseaume, 1881 is recognized from the southwestern Indian Ocean, composed of at least 17 species, including 4 previously described and revised herein, 11 other species which are described as new to the science, and 2 species which are illustrated herein but not described at this stage. From the Madagascar region are recognized M. anna (Nosi Bé, northwestern Madagascar) and M. claustra (Tuléar, southwestern Madagascar), M. picturata G. Nevill & H. Nevill, 1874 from Mauritius Island (Mascarene), M. amirantensis sp. nov. from Poivre Island (Almirantes), M. benthedii sp. nov. in the bathyal of Glorieuse Island and M. fimbriata sp. nov. in the upper recifal of this island, this last species with reserve due to a chromatic pattern of the shell poorly compatible with the pattern commonly shared by the other species of the group. M. coronata sp. nov. is also described from Tuléar and presents a wide distribution along the East African coasts, from Zanzibar down to southern Mozambique (Inhambane). From the Mozambique are recognized otherwise M. joanae Bozzetti, 2001 described from southern Mozambique (Quissico), M. mariaodetai Cossignani, 2010 described from Angola but belonging obviously to the fauna of the central Mozambique (from Inhambane to Bazaruto), M. catenata sp. nov., M. rutila sp. nov. and M. procera sp. nov. from the intermediate recifal in the surrounds of Moçambique (Sete Paus Island), M. squamosa sp. nov. from the vicinity of Moçambique (Goa Island and Conducia Bay) up to the surrounds of Nacala (Fernao Veloso Bay), M. storea sp. nov. and its sibling species M. signata sp. nov. from the surrounds of Moçambique (Conducia Bay). Three species complexes are recognized among the « tiny biconic and richly ornated Marginella from south-western Indian Ocean and South Africa: a complex M. anna focusing on the Canal of Mozambique and the Madagascar region, holding shells with a mostly spiral decoration and an animal chromatism made of radial digitations; a complex M. munda E.A. Smith, 1904 focusing on the Natal region, holding shells bearing a mostly axial decoration or deprived of any kind of decoration, with an animal chromatism supposed to be made of radial digitations like in the M. anna complex; a complex M. alborubra Rosado & Monteiro, 2015 overlapping and spilling over the southern distribution of the M. anna complex, and holding shells with simple and wide spiral bands, together with an animal supposed to be deprived of any kind of decoration. |
