Abstract
    Natural England is the government's adviser on the natural environment. In the marine environment Natural England are responsible for ensuring that Marine Protected Areas are well managed. This has included providing advice on the sensitivity of wildlife and habitats to activities and contributing to plans of actions. In this chapter we argue that it is where there has been strong stakeholder engagement with sea users, developers and statutory bodies that actions in management plans are most effectively implemented and where sustainable development has best been achieved. Poole Harbour on the southern UK coast is examined as a case study of how partnership approaches are crucial in enabling environmental outcomes in an estuary.
