Abstract

A survey of temperature and salinity variations with depth, conducted during February/March 1970, is described for the region off the southern half of South Island, New Zealand. Warm saline water of mainly subtropical origin was found to flow south-westwards down the west coast of South Island, eastwards across the Snares Shelf, and north-eastwards over the continental shelf off the east coast of South Island. Cooler, less saline, water flowed north-eastwards along the continental slope on the east coast of South Island towards the Mernoo Gap from where part flowed northwards through the Gap and the rest flowed eastwards along the southern flank of the Chatham Rise. Cool, low salinity, Subantarctic Water flowed generally in an eastwards direction over the Bounty Trough. An anticlockwise flow of Subantarctic Water (the Bounty-Campbell Gyral) was found in the south-western corner of the Bounty Trough.
