Commemorating the abolition or the Scheldt-toll Antwerp expresses its gratitude towards those who brought it about: the Belgian government with Charles Rogier as Minister for Foreign Affairs and the civil servants Baron Lambermont and Emile Banning. In the 13th century the rise or Antwerp set in and made of our city in the 16th century the metropo1is of the West. This cal1ing as a meeting-p]ace for world trade was broken when the Scheldt was closed in 1585. In 1648 the treaty of Munster has sealed this closure. The French revolution changed al1 this: the decree of 16 November 1792 has solemnly proclaimed the principle of the liberty of shipping and has put it into effect on the river Scheldt. The Congress of Vienna confirmed the principle of justice of the liberty of the river Scheldt. In contemplating the extension or our port since 183O we not only have to mention the part played by the municipality and the Antwerp economic circles but we also have to express our thanks to our governments. Thanks to the Ten-year plan our port doubles its capacity not only as far as shipping possibilities are concerned but also commercially and industrially. A new future has opened up for us. |
