Abstract
    The experiment was carried out in a constructed basin at the Statens Biologiske Stasjon at Flodevigen, in southern Norway. From late February to late July the basin was successively stocked with eggs and larvae of cod, plaice, flounder, herring and a hybrid from crossing flounder males and plaice females. Because incubation of pelagic eggs in the basin was unsuccessful, the incubation and hatching of these eggs was carried out in the laboratory and newly hatched larvae were then transferred to the basin. Herring eggs, however, were mainly hatched in the basin. Mature planktonic and benthic animals were transferred to the basin from local coastal waters. These organisms, together with their progeny, supplied the fish larvae with food. Studies were made on the effect of the food conditions on growth and survival of the fish fry. Relatively high survival of fry was observed for cod, plaice, flounder and herring, but hybrid fry did not survive.
