Abstract

P. fusiformis (= P. lanceolata Schroder 1900) and P. elegans are 2 dinoflagellates belonging to the family Dinococcidae Pascher. The first sp is shaped like a spindle and the 2nd is shaped like a highly curved crescent. Inside their cellulose envelopes, they both may develop one or two Gymnodinium-like swarmers. These become free swimming and then the individuals develop into nonmotile cysts either similar or somewhat different from those cysts from which they originated. For example, the new P. elegans cysts may have less curvature than their parent cysts (this change seems to be irreversible). The new nonmotile cysts behave like the preceding generation and there is a succession of cysts and flagellated free swimming stages. The time needed to complete each cycle is 2 or 3 days. Sizes of different stages are given in this paper.
