Abstract

Studies have been carried out on a population of N. diversicolor living in the salty canals of Livorno. It appears to differ from other populations in that it presents a greater morphological variation in the number of paragnaths of the pharynx and is found in differnet substrates according to the age of the individual. This pattern may be regarded as a racial characteristic due to local ecological requirements. The pharyngeal diversity observed in differnet individuals of the same population depends on the ecological conditions of the waters, correlating as it does with the distance of the given habitat from the mouth of the canal. The forms with the lowest number of paragnaths are found in habitats near the sea while those with the highest number are found inland in areas which are distinctly unfavourable to the phenotype with 0 and 1 paragnath in position I.Therefore the expression of variability changes but not amplitude.
