| Abstract |
The protoconchs and the lst juvenile turns of shells from 25 benthic gastropod spp collected in the Roscoff area were observed with the scanning electron microscope: Rissoidae, Cingula alderi and Alvania jeffreysi; Vitrinellidae, Tornus unisulcatus; Rissoellidae, Rissoella opalina; Omalogyridae, Ammonicera fischeriana; Cerithiidae, Bittium reticulatum and Bittium sp; Cerithiopsidae, Cerithiopsis barlei; Aclididae, Graphis albida and Cima minima; Turridae, Philbertia linearis and Philbertia linearis aequalis; Pyramidellidae, Chrysallida indistincta; Noemiamea dolioliformis, Evalea divisa, Evalea divisa var laevissima, Evalea diaphana, Eulimella laevis, Eulimella gracilis, Ebala nitidissima, Odostomia trunculata, Odostomia nivosa, Odostomia eulimoides and Turbonilla fenestrata; Philinidae, Philine punctata. The development process was not known for 16 spp; morphological characters of their protoconchs are given and a hypothesis is suggested to determine whether their development is pelagic or non-pelagic. The comparison of the protoconchs of closely related spp may elucidate their systematic position: e.g. Evalea diaphana appears synonymous with Odostomia perezi; Eulimella laevis is clearly separated from Eulimella gracilis, as Bittium reticulatum is from Bittium sp; 2 subspp exist in Philbertia linearis, P.linearis and Philbertia linearis aequalis; the validity of the genera Evalea, Noemiamea and Ebala is confirmed. |
