Abstract

Reexamining S. gyrans, using protein-silver impregnations, had added new information to what has been known till now. The cell orientation and torsion are clearly revealed by the 5 oblique somatic kineties. The first 3 curve around the length of the body to end at its antapical pole in a spiral corresponding to a 'scopula' that secretes a temporary adhesive thread. The last 2 kineties stop well anterior to the antapical pole. The morphogenesis of the peristome, confined to the interior by an invaginated cortical fold, seems identical to that in Tintinnida. It differs from that of other Oligotrichida in that the invagination remains superficial. It resembles that of the hypotrich family Euplotidae, except for the direction of growth of the anlage; in Strobilidium the anlage curves into a circle and the whole structure rotates relative to the surface on which it is located so that the paroral kinety is brought from a position parallel to the cell axis to a position parallel to the paroral kinety of the proter.
