| Abstract |
The growth and life-span of L. saxatilis rudis are studied with different methods on a well localized population. In this population the male show a seasonal sexual cycle. The most important ecological features of the ground are given. The growth curve obtained is in good agreement with previously published data. The young are 0.5mm sized when released. Immediately after, the youthful shell begins to calcify. When {approx} 1.4 mm sized all the young havea calcified shell, the shape of which will not vary any more, except for peculiar cases. From 7.5 mm height, the winkle shows an alternation of growth and non-growth phases, the frequency of the later increases with the size. The 1 yr old winkle is 10mm and mature. The ultimate height of the spp, {approx} 18.5 mm, is 5-6 yr. After maturity, their annual mortality rate is very high (85%); only {approx} 0.3% survive 3 yr more. The seasonal sexual cycle of the male lasts from 18 months to 4 yr old. In this population, the short life-span prevents probably the expression of the sexual regression phase (senescence phase). The seasonal sexual cycle of oldest winkle is probably a transition between maturity and senescence. Its bearing on the dynamics of the population should be low, considering relative number of these winkles. |
