Abstract
The Y-organ of P. serratus differentiates from a narrow strip of epidermis situated a little below the branchiostegite fold. It spreads forward and backward from the larval gland which seems to belong to the maxillulary segment. The nucleoplasmic ratio reaches its highest value during the C period and its lowest one in D (especially D SUB-2 ). The organ volume varies in an opposite manner. The noticed variations in nuclear volumes are not significant. Mitoses occur during the C and D periods. Their maximal frequency has been observed in D SUB-1 stage. At the contact zone with the gland, the cuticle often exhibits a more or less pronounced ridge which originates in a disturbance of the 'epidermic' function of the glandular cells.
