Abstract

This preliminary study shows that the marine bryozoan fauna from Central and South America, at least, comprises 1000 species in three large groups: tropical Atlantic ca. 400 spp., Magellanic ca. 200 spp. and tropical Pacific ca. 350 spp. The polymorphism varies from 74 to 77 percent between tropical atlantic and magellanic bryozoan faunas, the number of species being higher with three or more polymorphs in the former. This parameter increases from south to north in the Falklands, the Juan Fernandez and the Galapagos islands. The zoarial diversity through the H'/H'max. relation reach 60 percent around South America and Central America, except in the Gulf of Mexico where it only accounts 52 percent. These figures are similar to that of the Arctic (59.3 percent) and lower than those of the Indo-Pacific and the Antarctic (82.68 percent and 81.92 percent). From a bryozoogeographical point of view, the known bryozoan faunas from Central and South America can be distributed in the following regions: Tropical Pacific, Peru-Chile, Magellanic, Brasil-Uruguay and Tropical Atlantic.
