Abstract

This paper deals with the taxocoenoses of polychaete worms inhabiting the intertidal zone of an area in the south side of the Ria of Pontevedra. The area is affected by industrial wastes of paper draft and chlorine-soda. With the aim of evaluating the presumed effects on the taxocoenoses, the authors established three sampling stations at progressively farther distances from the waste pipe. As the distance increases, population density decreases, while diversity is greater and dominance is more evenly distributed. Near the refusal point the dominant species are those usually considered as pollution indicators. Population density of this species decreases in stations away from the refusal point, some of them disappearing in the remotest one. On the other hand, it is observed that the horizon more dense inside each station is that covered by Ulva rigida.
