Abstract
    The author of this article concludes that the North Sea is one of the most heavily polluted sea areas in the world. As the North Sea occupies a position of the central importance in heavily-industrialized Northern Europe, the source of its pollution are many and varied. Its waters wash the shores of six countries. The rivers and streams of a considerable part of Northern Europe empty into it. Heavy shipping traffic, dumping, pollution by fallout, exploitation of underwater oil reserves, and direct introduction of waters all add to the total pollution load, which the author point out is heaviest in the southern part.
