Abstract

This work presents different aspects on the biology of Mangelia nebula living in the Bay of Morlaix. On the muddy fine sand at "la Noire" station, the species forms a population with a mean density of 3.8 individuals per m super(2), with a range extending from 0 to 9.5 m super(-2), Laboratory experiments indicate that the majority of the population lives within the first centimetre-upper layer of the sediment. Eggs deposition occurs from January to May and veligers escape from the capsule after about three weeks, spending a part of this period of time in a free state within the capsule. The juveniles appear to grow at a rate of 0.28 mm per month during the autumn and the winter. Feces analysis indicates that Mangelia nebula feeds almost exclusively on a tubicolous polychaete, Spio decoratus. The examination of empty shells of Mangelia nebula reveals that his principal predator is a naticid gastropod.
