| Abstract |
Every municipality has at its disposal several emerengy plans. Mr De Padt is the mayor ofGeraardsbergen, a municipality with a population of 30.000 that is located in the valleyof the Dender, a relatively small rain river known for its turbulant character, and is assuch confronted with floodings and problems related to water.Even though many meetings have taken place and many plans have been made, anddespite preventive measures, we are never 100% protected against disasters. The threenatural phenomenon, water, fire and wind, are the cause of emergencies against whichwe should be armed. The job of the mayor is in the first place the coordination.Regarding the coordination there are several points of attention that should be kept inmind: the location and size of the disaster, essential aid, the evacuation of people andanimals, shelters, damage, the evaluation and new policy. This means that the fighting ofproblems relating to water on the municipality level is a permanent concern and part ofevery policy. Mr De Padt argues that the municipalities involved should have some meansat their disposal for the fighting of floodings and he is convinced that the municipalitieswill welcome these means. |
