Abstract

To make the revision of the genus Patella sensu lato, revision based on shell and radula characters, a large bibliography has been compiled and the most important European collections visited. Five subgenera [Patella, Patellastra, Ancistromesus, Cymbula, Laevipatella) are established in function of the disposition of the radulateeth and the form of the pluricuspidteeth. The sections are based on shell characters (Olana), geographical range (Patellanax, Penepatella) but mainly on the development of the central tooth (Patella, Scutellastra, Ancistromesus, Eliana, Patellidea, Cymbula and Patellona). The priority of name of each species is discussed and some new names had to be proposed. The principal varieties and a list of all synonyms are given. From the initially 240 names and more, the number of valid species has been reduced to 32.
