| Abstract |
Nearly 5300 cod from the North Atlantic and Arctic fisheries were examined for the incidence and intensity of infestation with larvae T. Decipiens, and Anisakis sp., between 1 Feb 1971 and 28 Feb 1973. The host's age, wt and length and the distribution of the nematodes within the flesh were determined. (2) The worm burden of the various cod stocks varied considerably. Larvae of T. Decipiens were abundant in the flesh of Icelandic and Faroe Plateau cod, but virtually absent in cod from the Greenland, Faroe Bank and Arcto-Norwegian fisheries. Larvae of Anisakis sp. were present in all of the stocks examined, the greater infestation being in the Arcto-Norwegian stock of which 95% of the fish were infested (mean of {approx} 10 Anisakis per fish). The infestation of the cod in the North Atlantic was found to be lower, 70-82% being infested (mean of {approx} 2 Anisakis per fish). (3) An attempt has been made to explain some of these differences. The variation in the infestation of cod with Terranova decipiens in the Icelandic fishery may be related to the distribution of the grey seal there. (4) Infestations by larvae of T. Decipiens of the Iceland/Greenland cod may be used to indicate the relative proportions of the Greenland and Iceland components of the spawning cod off south-west Iceland. |
