| Abstract |
From the mid 1960's the scientific literature records a significant increase in the number of publications dealing with organic compounds from marine fauna and flora. In Compounds from Marine Organisms, Volume 1, three major aims have been established: (1) to draw attention to the marine environment as a source of novel organic substances, in many cases displaying structural types differing from those available from non-marine sources; (2) to present an accurate record of organic compounds derived from marine organisms and; (3) to indicate where biological, microbiological or pharmacological activity has been reported. To allow rapid referral to the 504 compounds tabulated in order of increasing molecular complexity, the formula, structure, name, source, activity, original references and additionally, reported availability of each compound by synthesis or from nonmarine sources, is indicated. In separate chapters important classes of compounds are grouped and discussed. Original references have been used wherever possible, and this first volume incorporates compounds reported to the end of 1973 with the plan of establishing a base reference platform to which the increasing wealth of information in marine science can be added in annual volumes. A comprehensive referencing to original papers, to authors, and to compound names allows interdisciplinary users ready access to appropriate sections of specific interest. |
