Abstract
    The relative strength of ammonoid phragmocones has been previously described by a strength index based on the tensile hoop stress and constant tensile strength (40 MPa) of the phosphatic connecting rings between their prochoanitic septal necks. The latter appear to be of similar strength to retrochoanitic septal necks of ammonoids or nautiloids with the same strength index and material properties in the adjacent connecting rings. The likely correlation between the tensile strength, stiffness, and impermeability of connecting rings also reduces the stress concentrations at the ends of relatively deep-water-adapted connecting rings.
