Wave climate study in the port of Ostend based on field measurements
Vanderstichele, S. (2024). Wave climate study in the port of Ostend based on field measurements. MSc Thesis. Ghent University, Faculty of Engineering and Architecture: Ghent. xxviii, 135 pp.
This thesis presents a detailed investigation into the wave climate of the port of Ostend through field measurements. The primary focus is on converting pressure signals, measured by sensors, into corresponding wave elevation signals. The research is motivated by the need to validate the use of pressure sensors as a reliable method for wave measurement. Systematically wave measurements have been conducted using pressure sensors at five locations within the port. The study evaluates the accuracy and reliability of pressure sensor data, the conversion process from pressure signals to wave elevations, and a comparative analysis with radac measurements at the Jachthaven location. Key objectives include optimizing the transfer function for signal conversion and analysing the impact of infragravity waves and tidal influences on wave spectra. The findings aim to enhance the understanding of dominant wave frequencies and energy distribution within the harbour, providing insights into tidal and resonance phenomena. This research contributes to the field of coastal engineering by offering valuable methodologies for efficient wave monitoring and improving harbour design and safety protocols.
